In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr.
Today is MLK day. Dr. King would have been 87 if he were still with us. We remember him for his dedication to equality, his bravery in the face of violent opposition, and his commitment to making the world a better place. He has so many memorable quotes that it was hard for me to pick one to focus on today. But this one kept drawing me back, perhaps for its theme of finding union in opposites (e.g., yoga).
“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” We can’t have light without darkness, nor love without hate. It’s the polarities that bring meaning to our highest values. Like Leonard Cohen sings in his hit song Anthem, “there is a crack in everything. It’s how the light gets in.”
Let’s remember this idea today, in honor of a great man. And may you find light and love on your yoga mat and take it into your lives.
